Smile Design

Before & After

Your smile is one of the most important features of your looks. An attractive smile can improve your entire appearance and help to raise your confidence. Smile Design gives you the opportunity to create the smile you have always wanted. We will access your whole smile, the shape, the colour and the position of your teeth in relation to your lip line and gums. We will then listen to your concerns and aspirations and advise you on a suitable treatment plan. This may involve a range of treatments including fillings, crowns, inlays, tooth whitening but namely veneers. A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured porcelain, which is made to fit precisely over the front surface of your teeth. Veneers are ideal for covering gaps, lengthening or shortening teeth, reshaping chipped teeth or whitening stained teeth to improve their appearance. A 'Smile Makeover' after it is planned normally takes two main appointments and several review appointments.

We start by carrying out a thorough 'Smile Analysis'. By taking clinical photographs and x-rays and producing a duplicate model of your teeth, referred to as a wax-up, we are able to identify the best treatment plan for you, always taking into consideration your concerns and aspirations. Once you have decided to go ahead with treatment there are two main appointments that follow.

First Appointment

During this preparation appointment your teeth be minimally reduced to the right shape so that the new veneers will line up correctly and give the desired look once they are fitted. Local anaesthetic can be used for your total comfort. Once the teeth to be treated are prepared, your dentist will take an accurate impression (or mould) and a colour match from surrounding teeth. The veneer will then be prepared in the laboratory by a dental technician. Before leaving the surgery after your first appointment, temporary veneers are constructed and placed, so you will immediately see the benefit of your new smile. A great deal of care is taken at this stage so that you can assess the changes before the permanent veneers are fitted.

Review Appointment

This normally takes place two to three days after the preparation appointment. At this visit we will need to know your thoughts on the colour, shape, comfort, accuracy of the bite and how if at all your speech has been affected. Any minor changes can take place at this point. Once you and the dentist are completely satisfied another impression and photo are taken and sent to the laboratory where the individual handmade porcelain veneers are crafted.

Second Apointment

This appointment is normally two weeks after the preparation appointment. During this fitting appointment the veneers are glued to the tooth ensuring a natural look. Your dentist will show you the veneers before they are fitted to make sure you are happy with them. Only minor adjustments can be made to the veneers once they have been fitted. Another review appointment will take place two to three days after the fit appointment to check you are completely happy with the bite and the appearance of your new smile!

After Care

The life expectancy of veneers depends on your particular bite, whether you grind your teeth and how well you look after them. With the appropriate oral hygiene you can expect them to last 15 to 20 years. There is no special care needed once the veneer has been fitted other than the care you would give your natural teeth. We always recommend that you visit our hygienist on a regular basis and together you can design a treatment plan that suits you and that will prolong the life of your veneers. Regular brushing and flossing is of course essential.
